The global security landscape is increasingly complex, with more than 120 active armed conflicts globally, many occurring in protracted environments that entrench cycles of violence. In these contexts, respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) plays a crucial role in reducing harm, mitigating escalation, and laying the foundation for long-term peace. As conflict dynamics evolve and civilian vulnerabilities increase, peacebuilding and protection efforts must adapt to bridge the gap between policy intent and real-world impact.
This session will explore links between the respect for IHL and its contribution to laying the foundation for durable peace by reducing the human and societal cost of war and enabling recovery. It will also discuss how locally driven approaches, traditions and norms can complement and reinforce IHL in efforts to prevent violence, protect civilians and sustain peace.
