Programme

Geneva Peace Week 2023  was the celebration of a decade of Geneva Peace Week, held from 30 October to 3 November 2023. The forum brought together a diverse array of stakeholders from across the globe, marking a milestone in international peacebuilding efforts. With a staggering total of 61 events ranging from ceremonies to high-level panels, policy briefings, workshops, art exhibitions, and social gatherings, Geneva Peace Week 2023 was a testament to the power of collaboration and dialogue. A remarkable 167 partners, comprising 149 organizers and 18 institutional partners, joined forces to make this forum a resounding success. With 221 experts contributing their insights, the week-long event attracted an impressive 5,500 attendees, representing 155 countries.

Thematic Direction: Building Trust, Building Peace: An Agenda for the Future
 

The 2023 theme, "Building Trust, Building Peace: An Agenda for the Future," emphasizes the foundational role of trust in sustaining peace. With a focus on cultivating trust across communities, institutions, and nations, this year’s theme calls for future-focused strategies that address emerging challenges in peacebuilding. Participants will engage with diverse perspectives on trust as a means to strengthen social cohesion, foster dialogue, and create resilient communities. This theme sets the tone for Geneva Peace Week’s ambition to provide not only a platform for peace discussions but also actionable agendas to guide future peacebuilding efforts.

Call for Applications
 

In 2023, Geneva Peace Week welcomed applications from organizations around the globe to contribute as Event Organisers, offering them the chance to lead discussions aligned with one of the three thematic tracks. Partners had the option to design on-site events in one of two specific formats—Policy Briefings or Workshops. This format encouraged participants to explore policy impacts and practical solutions through interactive discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, ultimately promoting cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary collaboration on peace initiatives.

Geneva Peace Week meets New York

 

Geneva Peace Week Meets New York was a 1.5-day event at IPI, bringing together peacebuilders from Geneva, New York, and the field to discuss challenges to building sustainable peace. As part of preparations for the 2024 Summit of the Future and the 2025 Review of the Peacebuilding Architecture, the event explored proposals for a New Agenda for Peace and generated ideas for its implementation. Drawing on insights from the 10th Annual Geneva Peace Week (30 October–3 November 2023) and the ministerial meeting on the Summit of the Future during High-Level Week in September, the event revolved around the theme, ‘Building Trust, Building Peace.’ Discussions focused on revitalizing prevention and key workstreams from the New Agenda for Peace policy brief, including: Global-level prevention: addressing strategic risks, geopolitical divisions, and arms control; Conflict prevention and sustaining peace: strengthening human rights, the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and tackling climate-security risks; New peace approaches: addressing emerging threats, including AI, cyber, and LAWS, and promoting responsible innovation. The event was organized by the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and the International Peace Institute, with support from the Swiss FDFA.
