Screening for Peace: Gender Justice and Armed Conflicts

Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women - UN Women
  • 17/10/2024 @ 18:00 - 19:30
  • Auditorium Ivan Pictet (pétale 1) – Hybrid

In conflict situations, women and girls are disproportionately affected, underscoring the urgent need to promote their human rights at all levels. This requires advocating for their meaningful participation in decision-making and sharing best practices for gender-transformative peace policies. Survivor-centered justice is critical, particularly in addressing conflict-related sexual violence, as impunity hinders peacebuilding and perpetuates stigma. The Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, rooted in UN Resolution 1325, emphasizes women's involvement in peace processes. Although progress has been made, women remain largely excluded from formal negotiations, with limited representation in peace agreements. Evidence shows that women's participation leads to more resilient, lasting peace.

As part of this event, there will be a screening of the documentary Reparación Transformadora, produced by UN Women. The film delves into the aftermath of the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), focusing on the story of the 15 Q’eqchi’ Indigenous women, known as the Abuelas (Grandmothers) of Sepur Zarco, who sought justice for the atrocities committed against them during the war. Their struggle led to a landmark trial in Guatemala, resulting in a historic conviction for crimes against humanity, including sexual and domestic slavery. The documentary highlights their resilience, dignity, and the 18 transformative reparations awarded, 16 of which were community-focused.

Following the screening, a panel discussion will explore the intersection of the WPS agenda and transitional justice, emphasizing the transformative potential of reparations in empowering women and promoting systemic change. The panel will also examine how these processes can inspire global movements for justice and peace, while advocating for new strategies to ensure women’s access to justice in post-conflict settings.
